Mutations are the changes in chemical structure of genes which are manifested in altered protein structure and function. It can alter the sequence of nucleotides in a gene by inversion, deletion, substitution or frameshift changes. DNA replication errors or chemical and physical mutagens disturb the structure of nucleotides and mutate the gene.
