Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister, commissioned Operation Blue Star on 1 Jun 1984 to suppress the Khalistan uprising. Operation Bluestar was launched to remove the religious militant group of Khalistan movement from the Harmandir Sahib Temple in Amritsar. Operation Blue Star came at a cost. The military action was criticised by Sikhs worldwide who interpreted it as an act of hatred on the Sikh religion. Many Sikh soldiers in the army deserted their units. Some even returned awards received from the Indian government.
