When Fe(iron) is exposed to moist air, it reacts with oxygen to form rust. It is a very complex process, in which iron is oxidised to $F e^{+ 2}$ ions. Iron metal on reacting with moist air gives hydrated iron oxide. This doesn't protect the iron surface, exposing the iron metal to oxidation. This process is called rusting.
