Which of the two rational numbers is greater in the given pair ?
(i) 38 or 0 (ii) −29 or 0 (iii) −34 or 14
(iv) −57 or −47 (v) 23 or 34 (vi) −12 or -1
(i) 38 or 0
We know that every positive rational number is greater than 0.
∴38 is greater.
(ii) −29 or 0
We know that every negative rational number is less than 0
∴0 is greater.
(iii) −34 or 14
We know that every negative rational number is less than every positive rational number
∴14 is greater.
(iv) −57 or −47
Here, denominator is same i.e., it is 7. and (-4) > (-5)
∴−47 is greater.
(v) 23 or 34
Here, denominators are different.
∴ Making denominator same LCM of 3 and 4 = 12
∴23=2×43×4=812 and 34=3×34×3=912
∴ Between 812 and 912 and clearly 912 is greater or 34 is greater.
(vi) −12 or -1
Here, denominators are different
∴ Making denominator same, LCM of 2, 1 = 2
∴−12=−12
−1=−1×21×2=−22
and clearly −12 is greater.
