Taj Mahal is a mausoleum of white marble, built in Agra between 1631 and 1648 by order of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. He built it in the memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It is situated on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra. Verses from the Quran were inscribed in calligraphy on the arched entrances to the mausoleum. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
