Dermis is the inner thick layer of connective tissue made of elastin fibres. It contains blood vessels, nerve endings, hair follicles, sweat glands and sensory organs. The dermis extends into the epidermis as raised processes called dermal papillae. Aging or other factors like excessive sun exposure and smoking causes the skin to loose elasticity and cause skin sagging. The proteins required for skin firmness such as collagen, are mostly located in the dermis. The epidermis and dermis are thicker in the palms and under the feet.
