Namdharis were against cow slaughter, and so they raided slaughter houses in Amritsar, Raikot and killed the butchers who were involved in it. In January 1872, some 150 Kukas rode to Malerkotla to raid the slaughterhouses there. They were overpowered by the Malerkotla army and the British army. Many of the arrested Kukas were awarded life imprisonment and sent to Kala Pani.
