The Blending theory of inheritance was an older theory prevalent during the 1800s, which stated that offspring of two parents would always have the average or mix of the traits of the parents. For example, cross-pollinating a violet flowered plant with a white flowered plant would give a pale violet flowered offspring. This theory predated Mendel’s laws of inheritance. Through his experiments on inheritance of character(s), Mendel was able to prove that the parental characters do not blend or mix and are discrete.
