Chipko movement was a non-violent movement that was started to prevent illegal deforestation and destruction of forest and trees. This movement was based on Gandhian methods of satyagraha and nonviolent resistance. In this movement, people used to hug trees so as to prevent them from being cutting down. It started in the early 1970s in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, then in Uttar Pradesh with growing awareness towards rapid deforestation. Sunder Lal Bahuguna, an eminent environmentalist, was the man behind the Chipko movement. Women were active participants in this movement.
