Fixation of nitrogen,i.e, its reduction to NH3 is accomplished in three steps. In each step, two electrons(also 2 protons) are transferred from the reduced coenzyme NADPH to nitrogen. Di-amide and hydrazine are formed as intermediates. ATP, which comes through respiration provides energy.
