In the presence of light, potassium ion enters into guard cells thereby reducing the water potential while increasing the OP of cell sap. Thus endosmosis occurs, guard cells become turgid and the stomata opens.
In absence of light, efflux of potassium ions from guard cells occurs and there is an increase in the concentration of CO2 inside the guard cells occurs. Due to this, guard cells lose their turgidity and stomata closes.
