Solution

The correct option is (A) RNA

RNA as catalysts

The primitive environment favoured the formation of ribose which is a component ofRNA. Therefore, the formation of RNA was believed to be much before DNA. RNA has shown enzymatic activity. They are called ribozymes. For example, self-splicing introns, present in the rRNA precursor of the ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena, did not need protein enzymes to cut themselves.

Non-enzymatic activity of DNA and lipids

  • DNA has no enzymatic activity attributed to it; even for its replication, it depends upon enzymes.
  • Lipids do not show enzymatic activity.

Biological catalyst

Chemically, enzymes are made up of proteins. But in the earlier reducing environment, proteins did not act as enzymes. The evolution of proteins happened after RNA.

Final answer: (A) RNA
