Total sliding frictional force on any object depends on the roughness of the contact surfaces and normal force(for horizontal motion normal force is equal to the weight of the object) on the object. It does not depends on the area in contact. In both the cases total weight of the objects and roughness of the contact surfaces are same. So total frictional forces on both the cases will be same.
