Question

Which one of O3 and SO2 is diamagnetic?Also tell how to identify whether a compound is paramagnetic or diamagnetic.

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

molecule is O 3

Here central atom is O.

V= 6

X= 0

C= 0

A= 0

H=1/2{6 + 0 - 0 + 0) = 3

So hybridization of O in O3 is sp2.

There is no lone pair of electrons on O atom.

The three sp2 hybrid orbitals are present at the corners of a triangle to give the molecule triangular shape.

  • The given molecule is SO 2 .

Here central atom is S.

V= 6

X= 0

C= 0

A= 0

H=1/2{6 + 0 - 0 + 0) = 3

So hybridization of S in SO2 is sp2.

There is a lone pair of electrons present on S atom which gives the molecule bent geometry.

So SO2 is paramagnetic
