The white enamel coating of our teeth is made up of insoluble calcium phosphate, which is quite hard. The bacteria present in the mouth break down the sugar in our food to lactic acid.

The formation of this acid causes a decrease in pH and when the pH in the mouth falls below 5.5, the enamel gets corroded. It is, therefore, advisable to keep the mouth clean so that sugar and food particles may not be present.
