Question

Which one of the following compounds is more easily hydrolised by KOH and why ?

CH3CHClCH2CH3 OR CH3CH2CH2Cl

Open in App
Solution

A solution of KOH hydrolysis CH3CHClCH2CH3 more easily den CH3CH2CH2Cl because both the given compounds would majorly follow the SN1 mechanism.

SN1 Mechanism - This mechanism follows a path which proceeds through the formation of a relatively more stable, yet unstable reaction intermediate, which is in this case a carbocation also called a carbon-cation.

Both the given compounds would majorly follow the SN1 mechanism, since a stable intermediate can be obtained. The intermediate obtained on hydrolysis of the first compound is more stable than the one obtained on hydrolysis of the second. Hence the first is more easily hydrolysed.
