Which one of the following human organs is often called as the "graveyard" of RBCs?
Spleen
Spleen, made of lymphatic tissues, is known as the graveyard of RBCs. It acts as a reservoir for erythrocytes and can regulate the number in circulation. It is also the site for the breakdown of worn-out erythrocytes and stores the iron generated. Liver cells degrade the haemoglobin of worn-out erythrocytes or red blood corpuscles into bile pigments (bilirubin and biliverdin). The life of an RBC is about 120 days.
