Pulses

  • India is the largest consumer and producer of pulses in the world.
  • Major pulse producing states in India are Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh.
  • By fixing nitrogen from the air, all the leguminous crops except arhar, help in the restoration of fertility in the soil.
  • Therefore, leguminous crops are usually grown in rotation with other different crops.
  • Pulses are the major source of protein in vegetarian diets.
  • Gram, peas, masur, moog, urad,tur (arhar) are the major pulses that are grown in India.
  • Pulses survive even in dry conditions and they need less moisture.

Millets

  • The important millets grown in India are Ragi, Bajra, Jowar.
