There are three types of glands on the basis of mode of secretion:-
1. Apocrine glands - In this type of gland, only the apical portion of cytoplasm is discharged along with the secretory product. Examples are mammary gland, axillary sweat glands.
2. Merocrine glands - In this type of gland, secretory granules leave the cell by exocytosis with no loss of other cellular material. Examples are pancreas, salivary glands.
3. Holocrine glands - In this type of gland, the product of secretion is shed with the whole cell leading to its destruction. Examples are sebaceous gland.
