Question

Which one of the following is an example of a sub-aerial modification of the stem?
  1. Agave
  2. Oxalis
  3. Asparagus
  4. Tridax

Solution

The correct option is B Oxalis
In some plants, the stem is feeble or weak and its aerial part grows horizontally on the ground while some part of it remains underground. They may be of different kinds, like runner, stolon, sucker and offset. In the runner type, the stem consists of long internodes. Aerial branches are formed from the axil of scaly leaves which are present on the nodes while the roots arise from the lower side. e.g., Cynodon, Hydrocotyle, Oxalis.
