Which one of the following methods is used to separate acetone from water?
Sedimentation
As per the question
We need to find a method to separate acetone and water. Acetone is miscible in water.
Miscible liquids are those which properly mix with each other to form a single phase and no distinct layers are visible.
To separate two miscible liquids with the large difference in boiling points i.e. more than 25 ∘C distillation is used.
The boiling point of acetone:- 56 ∘C
The boiling point of water:- 100 ∘C
The mixture of acetone and water must be heated slightly above the boiling point of acetone so that entire acetone is converted to vapour state and transferred to a condenser where it condenses and is transformed into the liquid state.
In this way, a mixture of water and acetone is separated.
