Which one of the following pairs of organisms are exotic species introduced in India?
Ficus religiosa (Peepal) is a species that is native to the Indian subcontinent.
A species that is not native to a locality and has been moved there from its natural range by humans or other agents is called exotic species, e.g.,
Water hyacinth and Lantana camara were introduced into India by human activity.
The Nile perch and Japnese Kudzu are also exotic species, but they were not introduced into India. Japanese Kudzu was introduced into the southeast parts of the United States as an ornamental plant. However, without its natural predators, the plant soon turned severely invasive, climbing onto native trees and shrubbery, blocking out sunlight and killing the plants. The Nile perch was introduced into lake Victoria in Africa and that led to the extinction of cichlids - the native fish species of the lake. These fishes were mainly detritivores, and with the absence of significant fish numbers to feed on the detritus, the organic material accumulated in the lake. Thus, the loss of cichlids caused a massive deterioration of the lake.
