After the Second World War, America and Russia emerged as the two superpowers. England and France had become economically weak. Japan too was devastated because of the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Both US and USSR wanted to establish their supremacy in the world.

Russia had become a communist country after the Russian revolution. USA and her allies felt that communism was the biggest hindrance to capitalism.

After industrial revolution, industry oriented culture came into existence. Factory and workers became important factors in the economy. In due course of time, the workers were exploited by the factory owners. Karl Marx, a German communist thinker presented the ideology of communism to the world by writing two books. Russia was greatly influenced by it and a communist revolution took place in Russia where workers revolted against the capitalists and fought for their rights under the leadership of Lenin. However, capitalists felt that communism was not of their use and was against it which caused the spread of cold war.
