Question

Which orbitals have the highest shielding effect?

Open in App
Solution

Shielding effect:

  • In an atom where there are multi electrons, the nuclear attraction to the outermost electron/s gets hindered because of a shield that is created by the inner electrons.
  • Due to this, the outer electrons get free from any nuclear attraction.
  • The s-orbital has the highest shielding effect.
  • And the f-orbital has the lowest, because of the presence of the inner electrons.
