  2. Mitochondria (singular: mitochondrion) are double membrane-bound organelles found in most eukaryotic organisms.
  3. They are found inside the cytoplasm and essentially function as the cell’s “digestive system.”
  4. The function of mitochondria is to produce energy for the cell.
  5. Cells use a special molecule for energy called adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
  6. ATP is an energy-dense molecule responsible for powering most cellular processes in a living organism.
  7. When the cell needs more energy, the mitochondria can reproduce by growing larger and then dividing.
