The correct option is B IUCN
Our planet Earth is endowed with enormous and rich biodiversity.
But unfortunately, this biological wealth is rapidly declining due to human activities.
Earth has witnessed five episodes of mass extinction of species in the past and right now the sixth one is in progress. The rate of extinction of species in the sixth mass extinction is estimated to be 100 to 1,000 times faster than the earlier mass extinctions. This is mainly due to human activities.
One of the major extinctions of species due to human activities is the extinction of more than 2,000 species of native birds due to the colonisation of tropical Pacific Islands by humans.
Some examples of recent extinctions include dodo (Mauritius), quagga (Africa), thylacine (Australia), Steller’s Sea Cow (Russia) and three subspecies (Bali, Javan, Caspian) of tiger.
With this alarming rate of species extinction, an international organization IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) working in the field of conservation of nature and sustainable use of natural resources created the Red List of Threatened Species. It is a comprehensive document of the global conservation status of biological species.
The IUCN Red List (2004) documents the extinction of 784 species in the last 500 years which is quite alarming. Of this, 338 are vertebrates, 359 are invertebrates and 87 are plant species.
Nearly 27 species have disappeared in the last twenty years. It is estimated that 15,500 species worldwide are facing the threat of extinction. To be more specific, 12 percent of all bird species, 23 percent of all mammal species, 32 percent of all amphibian species and 31 percent of all gymnosperm species in the world face the threat of extinction. Records show that amphibians are more vulnerable to extinction.
