Question

Which part of the pollen grain forms the pollen tube and how?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

The male gametophyte forms a pollen tube. As the pollen grain falls on the stigma, the stigma secretes an exudate which consists of water, sugar, lipids, proteins, phenols, amino acids and calcium ions. These secretions initiate the growth of pollen tube. Pollen tube mediates the entry and transfer of the sperm cells to the female gametophyte through the carpel’s internal tissues.
