The cell undergoes cell cycle which includes interphase and M phase (division phase).
During interphase, the cell prepares to divide and eventually divides in M phase. Interphase is of long duration and is divided into three sub phases -
G1, S and G2.
During the G1 phase, there is cell growth and during S phase, DNA undergoes replication. G2 phase is the last phase of interphase where the cell forms all necessary proteins for division.
After interphase, the cell proceeds for division. The first phase of cell division is prophase. Hence, prophase occurs after the G2 phase.
