Interphase has a long duration and during this phase the cell prepares to divide by undergoing cell growth and DNA replication. Interphase is further divided into $G_1$ , S and $G_2$ phases. The cell cycle begins from the $G_1$ phase and as it follows the mitotic phase of the previous cell division cycle, it is also called the post-mitotic phase. $G_2$ phase is also called pre-mitotic phase as the cell enters into division phase after $G_2$ phase.
