Question

Which plant group has least developed archegonia?

Open in App
Solution

Archegonia:

  1. Archegonia which produces oospore (egg cells) is the female gametophyte of the lower group of plants.
  2. Archegonium is observed in bryophytes, pteridophytes and a few gymnosperms as well.
  3. As evolution happens, gametophytes tend to disappear and sporophytes rise to be well developed.
  4. This leads to bryophytes having the most developed archegonium and gymnosperms having the least developed archegonium which can be multiple in numbers.
