Two miscible liquids can be separated by the process of distillation. Distillation is used for liquids with a difference in boiling point of 20∘−30∘C. In this process, the mixture is heated in a distillation flask. The liquid with the lower boiling point will boil first and its vapours are passed through the condenser which converts the vapours to liquid. The liquid with the higher boiling point is left behind in the distillation flask. The process is shown below:
For, liquids with boiling point difference less than 20∘C, fractional distillation is done. It consists of a fractionating column in which liquids with different boiling points are collected in different columns.
