The fountain experiment can be used to illustrate the very high solubility of ammonia in water. In this experiment, water is introduced through an inlet to a container filled with ammonia gas. Ammonia dissolves into the water and the pressure in the container drops. As a result, more water is forced into the container from another inlet creating a fountain effect. Since the drop in pressure is significant enough to force the water to enter into the container we can say that ammonia is highly soluble in water.
