Which property of light makes a pencil cast a shadow when it is held in front of a light source ?

In a shadow region no light ray coming from the source is falling on the screen. If light travels in random zigzag direction and not in straight line then light from the source will bend around the object and we shouldn’t get any shadow region at all. So it shows that light travels in straight line.
