Solution

Liberation of Sulphur from H2S with concentrated form :

  1. H2SO4(aq)+H2S(aq)SO2(g)+2H2O(l)+S(s)conc.Sulphuricacid+HydrogenSulphideSulphurdioxide+Water+Sulphur
  2. H2SO4 act as an oxidizing agent.

Charring of sugar with hot concentrated acid

  1. It is done to remove the water from the sugar.
  2. So H2SO4 act as a dehydrating agent.

Liberation of carbon monoxide from hot concentrated acid:

  1. HCOOH(aq)conc.H2SO4CO(g)+H2O(l)FormicacidCarbonMonoxide+Water
  2. H2SO4acts as a dehydrating agent.

Hence,

  1. conc.H2SO4 acts as an oxidizing agent in the liberation of S from SO2
  2. conc.H2SO4 acts as a dehydrating agent in charring of sugar
  3. conc.H2SO4 acts as a dehydrating agent in the liberation of CO from HCOOH.
