Question

Which reaction follows inversion of configuration SN1 or SN2?

Open in App
Solution

SN2 reaction gives inversion of configration while SN1 reaction gives racemisation.

SN2 reaction occurs in a single step where there is a formation of intermediate compound in which there is a partial detachment of the existing halo group and partial attachment of the electronegative group. As both the groups are negatively charged(electro negative) they repel each other. The alkyl groups bend towards the leaving group rather than towards the attaching group. Thus the configuration is inverted. This is termed as WALDENINVERSION.

In SN1 reaction, the intermediate carbocation is formed at the end of first step and this is attacked by the nucleophile either from front side or from the back side. Thus a resemic mixture is formed. Here the bulkier groups are present as mostly tertiary haloalkanes undergo this type of reactions. Stearic hinderens predominates here.
