Question

Which salt has highest pH in water?

Open in App
Solution

  • pH scale - It is a measure of how acidic or basic water it is (The range is 0 to 14, from 0 to 7 this is acidic water, 7 is neutral, from 7 to 14 this is basic water).
  • Since the concentration of hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions in pure water is constant, the substance remains neutral (even if its pH changes).
  • The New Neutral Point on the pH Scale at this higher temperature is at 100°C, which has a pH value of 6.14.

  • A salt that gives OH- ions on dissociation in water, shows high pH values, and is basic in n nature.
  • Also, salts which are the results of a weak acid and a strong base are basic in nature.

Example:

  • Na2CO3 salt has high pH because it is a combination of a strong base (NaOH) and weak acid (H2CO3).
