Initially, Carl Linnaeus divided the living organisms into two kingdoms, Plantae (Vegetabilia) and Animalia. Later Haeckel considered three kingdoms for classification, Protista, Plantae and Animalia. Copeland divided living organisms into four kingdoms, Monera, Protista, Plantae, and Animalia. Robert Whittaker was the first person to bring in five kingdom classification that included Fungi as a separate kingdom along with Monera, Protista, Plantae and Animalia.
