Solution

The separation technique applied for the separation of a mixture of Sodium chloride (NaCl) from its solution in water is evaporation.

Evaporation: The process of conversion of liquid into vapours is called evaporation. The rate of evaporation becomes faster on increasing the temperature.

  • Example: Evaporation of water.

Principle involved in the separation of mixture:

  • Sodium chloride does not evaporate (non-volatile solute) whereas water (volatile solvent) undergoes evaporation leaving behind Sodium chloride.
  • Volatile substances: The substances which have the tendency to transform into the vapour phase.
  • Non-volatile substances: The substances which do not have the tendency to transform into the vapour phase.
