2) Ammonium Chloride and common salt

Solution

Dear Student,
Sodium chloride from its solution in water can be separated by the method of evaporation and distillation. In evaporation, the solution is taken in a evaporating dish and heated carefully. Water evaporates and salt is left behind. Distillation is used to separate a mixture of soluble solid from a liquid component. The mixture is taken in a round bottomed flask with a side delivery tube. The flask is heated carefully. The liquid component (water) evaporates and later condenses that eventually gets collected in the receiver. The solid component (sodium chloride) remains in the flask.

2. Ammonium chloride and common salt can be separated using sublimation. This method is used to separate a sublimable solid from a non-profit sublimable solid. Ammonium chloride is sublimable. In this technique, the mixture is taken in a evaporating dish and cover the mixture with a funnel which is plugged with cotton. The dish is heated slowly. Ammonium chloride vapourises gradually and settles in the inner wall of the funnel whereas salt remains in the dish.
