Dear student,
Crossing over during meiosis results in genetic recombination in the cell and it is responsible for bringing about genetic diversity in the population. This genetic recombination is the key to the process of evolution. The process of crossing over takes place during the prophase I stage(zygotene stage) of meiosis I. During the zygotene stage of prophase I , two homologous chromosomes comes close to each other, this is followed by synapsis and then formsation ofsynaptonemal complex takes place. Thus, recombination takes place.
