Water

Water is the most abundant fraction of a cell. It constitutes 70 to 80 percent of the body of a living being. Water is a colourless, transparent, tasteless and odourless liquid which has a maximum density at 4${}^o$C, freezes at 0${}^o$C and boils at 100${}^o$C. It is made up of tiny polar molecules that can readily pass through cell membranes. Hydrogen bonding allows water to the fluid structure. It has high specific heat, high specific conductivity, a high latent heat of vapourisation, dissociates electrolytes, dissolves a large number of substances, and is incompressible. All these properties are the reason that water has been selected as a solvent of life and it is the most abundant molecule in cell protoplasm.
