The substitution reactions which ethyne undergoes to form compounds with metals do not occur with the ethylene. These reactions can be used as tests to distinguish between acetylene and ethylene. When acetylene is passed through an ammonical solution of cuprous chloride at room temperature cuprous acetylide(red) is formed.
