Question

Which test will you carry out to find out if a given solution is saturated or unsaturated or supersaturated?

Open in App
Solution

At any particular temperature, a solution that has dissolved as much solute as it is capable of dissolving is said to be a saturated solution.

If you add more amount of X in the solution then :

(a) If it remains undissolved that means it is a saturated solution.

(b) If it dissolves then it is an unsaturated solution.

Usually For solids Solubility is a function of temperature, so on decreasing the temperature solubility decreases therefore if a hot saturated solution of X is cooled then more and more amount of X (which is solute here) will precipitate out and settle down at the bottom.

In order to find out, just put a crystal or soluble solute in the solution.
An unsaturated solution has the tendency to dissolve more of the solute in it because of which the crystal or solute will reduce in size. This is because unsaturated solutions have the weaker bonds also that immediately breaks to make a bond with the newer substance.

Also, in case of the supersaturated solution, there is an excess of solute in the solution so, it wants to leave its excess solute, due to which added crystal or solute will become bigger in size than before.
