Question

Which would lose water by transpiration faster a plant growing in direct sunlight or a plant growing in shade? Why?

Open in App
Solution

Transpiration is the loss of water from plants through the stomata in leaves. Plants growing under direct sunlight will loose more water due to transpiration.
Leaves require sunlight for photosynthesis. An increased intensity of sunlight, will increase the rate of photosynthesis and the leaves will require more water for photosynthesis. So the photosynthesising leaf loses more amount of water by evaporation.
