Question

While determing the density of the material of a sphere using a spring balance and measuring cylinder,a student noted the following readings

a)Reading of water level in the cylinder without sphere in it=56ml

b)Reading of water level in the cylinder with sphere in it=64ml

If the mass of the sphere is 80g,calculate the density of the sphere.

Open in App
Solution

Mass = 80 grams = 0.008 kg

Initial reading = 56 ml

Final reading = 64 ml

Volume of sphere = Amount of water displaced by it

Amount of water displaced by it =
Final reading - Initial reading
= 64 - 56
= 8ml

Volume = 8 ml = 8 cm³ [ 1 ml = 1 cm³]

Density = Mass / Volume
= 80/8
= 10 g/cm³
= 10000 kg/m³ [1g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³]
