Question

While jogging on a straight road, Ann covers 300 m towards east in 2 minutes 50 seconds. Then, she turned around and jogs for 1 minute covering a distance of 100 m. Calculate average speed and average velocity. [2 MARKS]

Solution

Finding distance/displacement : 1 Mark
Finding average speed/velocity : 1 Mark

The diagram representing the motion is as follows

From A to C:

Time taken = 170 s + 60 s = 230 s

Distance travelled = 300 m + 100 m = 400 m

Hence, average speed=400230=1.74 m/s

Displacement = AC = 200 m

So, average velocity=200230=0.869 m/s
