Question

White light is passed through the double slit and interference pattern is observed on a screen 2.5 m away. The separation between the slits is 0.5 mm. The first violet and red fringes are formed at distances of 2 mm and 3.5 mm away from the central white fringe respectively. Calculate wavelengths of red and violet light.

Solution

The correct option is D 700 nm and 400 nm
Given:
D=2.5 m
d=0.5 mm

For the first bright fringe, the distance from the center is,
β=Dλd

For violet light,
β=2 mm
Thus, 2×103=2.5×λv0.5×103
λv=25×106 m=400 nm

Similarly for red light,
β=3.5 mm
Thus, 3.5×103=2.5×λr0.5×103

λr=0.7×106 m=700 nm

Hence, (D) is the correct answer.

Why this question :Application: The double slit experiment can be usedto determine the wavelength of visible light.
