It was presented to Satyajit Ray in 1984 who is credited with bringing world recognition to Indian cinema. The acclaimed filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee was conferred the award in 1999. The founder of Yash Raj Films, Yash Chopra was presented the award in 2001. Dev Anand, who is widely revered as evergreen star of Hindi cinema, was also presented the award.
