After the defeat of Ottoman Turkey in the First World War, the British imposed a harsh treaty on the Ottoman Emperor, the Khalifa, who was the spiritual head of the Islamic world. This treaty struck panic in the Muslim community around the world as they feared it would result in the loss of Muslim unity. In March 1919, to defend the Khalifa’s temporal powers, a Khilafat Committee was formed in Bombay. Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali, known as the Ali brothers, led the Khilafat Movement along with Mahatma Gandhi.
