In the 19th century, the region that made Up most of present-day Rajasthan was called ‘Rajputana’ by the British.
This area was inhabited by Rajputs along with several other people.
However, the Rajputs are often credited for the distinctive culture of Rajasthan.
Most of the areas of Rajasthan were ruled by various Rajput families.
There were (and are) several groups who identify themselves as Rajputs in many areas of northern and central India.
Tradition of Heroism-
These traditions were often linked with the ideals and aspirations of the rulers.
Rulers cherished the ideal of the ‘Hero’ that is, It is better to die on the battlefield than defeat.
The stories about Rajput heroes were recorded in poems and songs which were recited by specially trained minstrels
These stories were expected to inspire others to follow their example.
Ordinary people were also attracted by these stories – which often depicted dramatic situations, and a range of strong emotions – loyalty, friendship,love, valour, anger, etc.
